Epworth Park Earns Spot on National Register of Historic Places

Belmont County has a new reason to celebrate — Epworth Park in Bethesda, Ohio, has officially been added to the National Register of Historic Places. This designation recognizes the park’s historical, cultural, and architectural significance, while also opening the door to preservation funding that will help protect its legacy for future generations.

Founded in 1870 as a Methodist camp meeting site, Epworth Park quickly became a gathering place for spiritual renewal, community connection, and cultural enrichment. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a hub for Chautauqua programs that blended education, music, drama, and guest lectures. Throughout its history, the park has hosted speeches by future U.S. presidents.

The 20.5-acre district is home to 59 distinctive 100-year-old Victorian cottages, each with a unique personality and charm. The cottages line tree-shaded streets and wrap around a serene lake, creating a postcard-perfect setting that feels like stepping into the past. Considered a Belmont County “hidden gem,” at the park, visitors can enjoy the playground, green spaces, and the peaceful atmosphere.

Being listed on the National Register is not just about recognizing the past: it’s about protecting it for the future. This designation will help support restoration efforts and ensure that Epworth Park remains a welcoming destination for both residents and visitors.

Recently, Epworth Park has been working towards preserving nature while also further beautifying the park. With the help of generous donors, Epworth is strategically placing butterfly gardens throughout the park, which both benefit the environment by providing a sanctuary for essential pollinators and providing an educational opportunity. Visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature with these new environmental additions.

Epworth Park is open from dawn to dusk, April 1st through October 31st. Every July, the park hosts the annual Chautauqua Days, which welcomes a large crowd for family fun in a historical setting. The event celebrates history, tradition, and heritage with craft vendors, live music at the amphitheater, a parade, a car show, and activities for kids.

Epworth Park is now one of many historic treasures waiting to be explored in Belmont County.
Step back into the past, immerse yourself in nature, and explore this Appalachian Ohio hidden gem.
