In the city of Martins Ferry, at the corner of Hanover and 5th Street, sits a three-story toy store that you have to see to believe! Currently owned by Michael and Constance Yeso, Deluxe Toy & Hobby is possibly the largest, continuously owned toy store in the nation, having been started by Contance’s parents, William and Angela Tolbert in 1955.
The toy store was moved to its current location in 1978, quickly filling up all three stories with toys. The Yesos put a lot of time and attention into selecting the toys for the store, attending the American Toy Fair in New York City every year. The toys run from simple and nostalgic to new and unique.
The first floor offers science-related toys, model kits, remote control vehicles and train sets and accessories. The second floor features board games, dolls, puzzles, trucks, action figures, and a variety of pretend play toys.The basement contains the outdoor toys and sports equipment, as well as toy boxes and children’s furniture.
It is the variety of toys and the customer service of this family-run business that has enabled it to be successful for so long. How many businesses can claim fourth and fifth generation customers? They have a map on the wall with push pins showing that customers have come from all over the United States and even other counties.
If there is a toy that you loved as a child, chances are Deluxe Toy & Hobby has it so you can share that joy with your children or grandchildren. The Yesos even use their grandchildren (and their parents before them) as “toy testers”, keeping up with trends while still offering the classics that inspire creativity and develop young minds.
