Get Hooked! Friday Fish Fry is a Lenten Tradition in Belmont County

If it is a Friday during Lent in the Ohio Valley, you can bet there will be local fish fry fundraisers and restaurants serving seafood specials. Fish is often served on Friday nights during Lent (46 days in 2021), the Christian season of repentance, as a restaurant special or through fundraisers.

Below is a list of local, Lenten fish fry events and a list of Belmont County restaurants offering Friday or weekend fish specials during this time.

Support a good cause and get your fish fix at a local fish fry:

The Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #2541 in St. Clairsville (50690 National Rd.) is hosting a Friday fish fry featuring fish sandwiches, fish dinners, 21 piece shrimp dinners, 7 piece butterfly shrimp dinners, or fish tacos. All dinners are served with coleslaw, bread, pickles and tarter sauces with your choice of fresh cut or crinkle fires, onion rings, or macaroni and cheese. Call 740-695-9164 to place an order.

The St. Clairsville VFW #5356 (4671 National Rd.) has a fish fry every Friday though April 2 from 11 a.m-7 pm. Delivery is available within a 5-mile radius with a $20 minimum order. The menu includes Coleman’s fish sandwich, Coleman’s fish dinner (includes fries or onion rings and cottage cheese or coleslaw), and the above listed side dishes, a la carte.

The Flushing Volunteer Fire Department (104 E. High St.) is hosting a fish fry every Friday during Lent from 11 am-6 pm. Dinners include fries with coleslaw or mac and cheese and include fish, three-piece chicken strip, or 21 piece shrimp. A variety of sides, drinks and a different dessert each week are also available for purchase. Call 740-968-4700 for local delivery or take out orders.

A Coleman’s Fish Fry will be held every Friday during Lent from 11:30 am-9 pm at B Hind the 8 Ball (56731 Colerain Pike) in Martins Ferry (Old Steeple Valley School). Call (740) 633-6506 to place an order for pick-up or dine in.

The Sons of Italy, 3348 Belmont St. in Bellaire, has a fish fry every Friday until Easter from 11 am to 6 pm. Sandwiches are $6 and side dishes are $1.50. Dinner, which includes a sandwich and 2 sides, is $9. Side dishes are: Cole Slaw, French Fries or Onion Rings. Call (740) 676-3178 to place an order.

The Smith Volunteer Fire Department in Centerville (46389 Fire House St.) is hosting its annual fish fry every Friday from 11am – 6pm. Call (740) 686-2150 for take-out orders. They will also be selling pie from Oliver’s Pies of Wheeling.

The Holloway Volunteer Fire Department is having a fish fry the first Friday of each month starting March 5 from 11 am-6pm. Call ahead to order at 740-968-0504.
